What is a resource box?

A resource box is a short section of text that some authors append to the end of their articles.

The purpose of the resource box is to show, in plain view, a small amount of information about the author.

Many authors will allow you to copy their article and place it on your own website.

Their reasons for doing this are:

  • provide content for others
  • gain recognition for their work
  • gain a link from a related site back to their site.
  • attract a visitor from the site that used their content
  • provide content for search engines
  • gain visitors from search engines
  • get feedback regarding the quality and usefulness of their article
  • find joint venture partners
  • find like-minded webmasters

Do not be afraid that including someone else's article with a resource box, that you will lose visitors. This is generally not the case, unless your site has very little value. - this is more reason for you to build up your site with other people's articles.

The main value to the original writer is not to gain visitors directly from the site displaying their article. The main value is that their link is recognized by the search engines.

If you have a site that has very little content, using articles written by others is a great way to increase the value of your site. It would be great if you could write all your own content, but most of us don't have the time or the expertise to do it.

Even if you are a good writer and you know your subject well, there are many areas you don't have time to cover, so finding a quality article and using it on your site makes a lot of sense.

All you need to do is check the article's quality, read the resource box to determine your rights and obligations - usually set out in the resource box - and then copy it and place it on your site.

Be sure to create a live link back to the author's site, as they requested in the resource box.

Then you can do one more thing, which most people do not. You can write to the author to tell them you have placed their article on your site. You can also ask if they have any other articles that might be useful for you. This may get you a few more articles for very little effort on your part.

I recommend you try it - it really does work. - And don't be afraid that the resource box will cause you to lose visitors. The web is a collaboration and you will find that when you help others, you help yourself too.

Then write your own article, add your own resource box and encourage others to use it.

To find ways to get your articles seen, read about Submitting Articles.

You may copy this article and place it on your own website, as long as you do not change it and include this resource box including the live link to the Small Business Strategy site.
